Becoming a Child of God:
Are you wondering what it takes to be saved- become a follower of Jesus and a child of God? The answer is found in the following scriptures. I pray that if you haven’t yet made the most important decision to follow Christ that today will be the day of salvation for you.
- No one is “good enough” to go to heaven. Jesus was the only person ever to live that qualified to go to heaven when He died.
“As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:” Romans 3:10
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” Romans 3:23
- If no one is worthy, then how can we be saved?
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23
- Jesus is the answer. He was completely sinless and so by accepting his perfect sacrifice and choosing to follow Him, we receive His righteousness. We no longer have to face our penalty for sin because it was already paid for by Jesus on the cross.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8
- You may now be asking, “How do I accept His gift and become a child of God?” You must believe (put your faith and trust in) Jesus as God’s Son, that He lived a sinless life, gave that life up for you on the cross, and that on the third day God raised Him from the dead. And you must confess Him as your Lord. Making this choice is how you accept His gift of salvation from sin and eternal life as a child of God.
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Romans 10:9-10
“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:” John 1:12
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9

Maybe you have believed and confessed at some point in your life but you have fallen away from your faith and wonder if you were ever actually saved. If you have, I know how you feel. I started my walk with Christ when I was only seven and assurance has been something that I have struggled with during multiple season of my life. One thing I have found helpful when faced with doubts is the following podcast by John Piper. It addresses the scripture Romans 8:16 and the concept of the Holy Spirit bearing witness that we are children of God. This is only Pastor John’s opinion and shouldn’t be used as the only means to test for yourself your salvation, but I do hope that you find it helpful if you are in a season of doubt.
